Armed Security License

 

Requirements for Obtaining an Armed Security License 

In order to become a security guard in the state of California, you need to obtain a security license, and be active on the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS) website. In order to be BSIS approved, you must complete the 40 hours of mandated training, pass a rigorous, multi-point background check, and Live Scan. The state of California has strict requirements for armed security guards to legally work, and in order to be fully certified, security guards must complete the full 40 hours of training. Once you have obtained the Level I certification, you must complete the additional 32 hours of intensive training to meet the mandatory 40 hours required for an Armed Security License. The three additional levels cover the following:

 

Level II – Armed Security Guard License (8 hours) 

  1. Public Relations
  2. Observation and Documentation 

 

Level III (8 hours)

  1. Communications and its Significance 
  2. Legal and Liability Aspects

 

Level IV (8 hours)

  1. Criminal Law in General
  2. Crimes Against Property
  3. Crimes Against Public
  4. Arrest
  5. Searches
  6. Exclusionary Rule
  7. Fifth and Sixth Amendment 
  8. The Shopkeeper’s Privilege
  9. All Radio Procedures 
  10. Criminal Trespass

 

Level V (8 hours)

  1. Crowd Control
  2. Handling Difficult People

 

Reasons to Obtain an Armed Security License

There are a variety of reasons to continue your security guard training to obtain an Armed Security License. Financially speaking, the salary for armed guards is higher than unarmed guards. You will also be a more marketable employee and prime candidate for career advancement. 

 

Secondly, you will have more opportunities for career advancement.  Also, personally you will be more protected while working. Hopefully, you will not have to ever use your firearm while on duty, but you may be put in a dangerous situation, and possessing a firearm may help resolve the issue. Sometimes, just having a firearm with you can cut down on dangerous situations while you’re on duty. It is worth doing the extra training so you have the knowledge and tools to prepare for any situation that may come your way.
