According to a report by the Council on Criminal Justice, shoplifting rates are higher in November and December because of the “increase in in-person retail activity” during the holidays. Organized retail crime (ORC) and “opportunity” shoplifters will keep retailers on alert during the holidays. Experts recommend hiring trained security guards to deter theft.
What To Watch For. Security guards watch for suspicious behaviors when identifying potential shoplifters. They include those visiting a store frequently without making a purchase, looking nervous and avoiding interaction or eye contact with store staff. ORC shoplifters typically work in teams, distracting staff while others steal. With more people in stores during the holidays, the easier it is for criminals to shoplift without being noticed.
Teenagers are the most likely to shoplift. Most stolen items by ORC rings are apparel, electronics, health and beauty products and accessories. They are then sold online or on the black market.
Retail security guards watch for suspicious behavior. They create a visible presence by being stationed around the store, especially near merchandise sought after by criminals. Others are at entrances to stop anyone from leaving with merchandise without paying.
