As we’ve seen with the latest school shooting (this time at Michigan State University), random violence continues to plague schools—from elementary to college levels. While not every violent act can be prevented by enlisting the services of school security guards, guards can make a difference.
What School Security Guards Do. School security guards have many roles. They are stationed at a school’s main office so those entering must pass through a checkpoint before being allowed in. If necessary, they can also do wand screenings to ensure no illegal or dangerous items make it on campus.
Another important function of a school security guard is to patrol the school perimeter and inside the campus. Guards look for individuals who are attempting unauthorized entry or appear to be on campus without permission. If doors must remain locked, guards make sure they are secured.
Campus guards also respond to disturbances. If violence occurs, the guards are quick to take action, subduing the individuals in question until law enforcement arrives.
Will on-campus security guards stop all acts of violence? No, but their presence can deter at least some of those wanting to harm students and faculty from carrying out their violent plans.
