Requirements When deciding to become a security supervisor there are several key components you must consider before applying. First, you must have relative experience as a security guard, police officer or any type of law enforcement position. When it comes to education requirements they typically vary depending on the business. Most companies require only a high school diploma, while others require you to hold a college degree (bachelor’s) in engineering or some sort of computer science. All potential candidates must have a valid driver’s license and no criminal background.

Duties
A security supervisor monitors the staff by patrolling with them by auto or on foot. The security supervisor is also responsible for monitoring the electronic surveillance equipment used on property. If a crime does take place, the security supervisor oversees the transfer of the person to the proper law enforcement. The supervisor works with the staff to create safety plans for the buildings he monitors, so it can adhere for a secure site for his staff and the patrons.

There are vital skills that a security supervisor must possess when pursuing this position. For example, good communication skills (oral and written) are essential so their employees know how to do their jobs and what to be observing. A security supervisor must also have a good working knowledge of management skills and principles so they can efficiently perform the job duties. It requires someone with very good critical thinking skills who can effectively control a situation and make the appropriate decisions when it comes to safety.

Statistics
Now that the demand for security guards are at an all-time high, the demand for an experienced security supervisor will increase as well. Private companies are taking over the duties and safety that once was filled by local police departments. In 2010, the median annual wage for security guards was $24,380. A security supervisor with experience can expect to make a much higher salary. The number of jobs for security guards is expected to grow by 19 percent between 2010 and 2020, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
